Musical Keyboard

This web app allows you to create music with your keyboard. Click the button below to start, then press keys on your keyboard to play musical notes. The notes are of the 12-note scale to which modern ears are accustomed, and the note played is determined by the keyCode of the event, which is generally the same as the traditional ASCII code for the key. This means that special keys like Esc produce a low frequency sound, while numbers and letters produce higher frequencies. Some symbols produce frequencies that are too high by any standard, so the keyCode is modulo 128. When you press keys, the code, frequency, and note of the latest are displayed. Use shift for square waves.
